Unsplintering

Seeking to corral some of the scattered parts of myself, I’ve decided to consolidate various locations for my writing and bring everything together here at my personal website under the News & Views section. (If you want to receive new posts as email, you are able to do that from a sign-up tool on that page.)

The Mumpsimus archive will remain where it is and what it is, but I will not be posting new material to my academic blog, Finite Eyes. I have imported all the posts from that blog over here so that I can end the finiteeyes.net account when it comes up for renewal. Those posts are available via the Finite Eyes category.

I am also going to end my Patreon. It served its purpose well and the pressure of wanting to give people something for their $1/month got me writing things I would not have otherwise written, but I simply don’t have time now to keep up with that and also do the other work I want and need to do, including, I hope, some future books. All public Patreon posts have been brought over here, and before I close it down for good I will bring the Lexias posts over that were the product of patrons’ support.

When I created the Finite Eyes blog and then the Patreon, I thought they were the best way to present diverse pieces of writing to different audiences, but as time has gone on I’ve felt more and more fragmented. While I recognize that none of the people who are interested in my writing are interested in all the same things I am, I don’t think the separation of different types of writing is doing me much good. I feel splintered, and I need to feel more whole. Much as I sometimes pretend otherwise, the various sorts of writing I do are, in fact, done by the same person, and it’s time to show that better. Uniting everything here on my own website will, I hope, allow me to integrate the dispersed pieces of my self.

I am also doing this because I’ve had the time to really research the technical side and build up this website in a way that works for me. When I fled Blogger because it was getting too clumsy for my needs, I went with Patreon because I didn’t know how to make this website do what I wanted. Thanks to some help from colleagues and from a lot of trial and error, I am now pretty happy with the way things work around here, and I have my fingers crossed it will all be pretty smooth sailing for readers.

So here we are. Fiction and nonfiction, academic and nonacademic, all the writing together in one place. Defragmented, unsplintered.
