Rick was someone I knew first as a writer, then as a person, and he became a friend and mentor. My story “Killing Fairies” was written in an attempt to figure out how he wrote such beautiful works of fictional memoir, and it taught me that his craft was even more accomplished than I had known, because he made something look easy that is incredibly difficult to achieve. I hope my words at Uncanny give a glimpse of what made him and his writing so special, and what a great loss his death is for us.
